WSOP Final Table Delay

May 9, 2008

One of the major topics of the week over at the Poker Affiliate Forums has been the fact that the WSOP is delaying the play of the final table for nearly four full months so they can hype the final table and broadcast the final table nearly live.

Jeremy asked in the forum what we thought about all thought about it and there were some mixed responses. Generally the idea is that affiliates will end up making more money on this but that the tournament itself is going to pretty much suck.

It’s pretty obvious that Jeremy is against the idea and pointed out that the media outlets covering the event are going to get pinched pretty bad. Companies like PokerNews are flying in people from Australia for the event and now they are only going to get to cover up to the start of the final table w/o having to send everyone home and then back out again in three and a half months, adding in a huge extra expense for the coverage.

The question I pose though, is it going to be worth it all around from a business standpoint IF it rekindles another huge spark in poker?

The idea of the WSOP delaying the final table event was first brought up by PPP who later commented that he shouldn’t have so freely given away linkbait opportunity. It also looks like Back In Black was one of the first to see the opportunity for linkbait and scored a link from the PokerStars Blog even. Nicely done dude, sometimes it pays to be first to get up some quality content on a subject, got a few thousand visitors and lots of link love.
